“The secret of beauty is being interesting” Christian Dior’s beginnings are linked with a small Paris art gallery, where he showed his paintings alongside Aristide Maillol, Fernand Léger, Salvador Dali and where he learned the art of fashion illustration. From 1942 he worked at Lucien Lelong’s fashion house and, in October 1946, opened his first atelier, managing to establish himself until he revolutionised contemporary fashion, proposing a new model of femininity: the shoulders are no longer padded, long corolla-shaped skirts, wasp waists and an abundance of fine fabrics such to contribute to the recovery of the textile industry. That’s how the New Look line was born, and in 1948 he opened a boutique in New York: in a few days, the international press made the name Christian Dior famous. Since then, he continued to surprise the fashion world by launching new lines (from the illusion line to the tulip line, the sack line…). Most of all, he was the first designer to conceive and sell a complete line of accessories combined with the clothes. At his premature death in 1957 he was succeded by Yves Saint-Laurent, Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferrè and, finally, once the brand was brought into the LVMH Group, John Galliano. All the British designer’s collection pay homage to Christian Dior and stand out through an unusual style, where clothes and accessories unite to exalt an ideal. Over time, the pret-a-porter world was joined by perfume, which strengthens this glamour and feminine vision through olfactory creations that have now passed into legend: Miss Dior, J’Adore, Poison...
